Stamping Ground plot

Following Woodstock, a three-day pop festival was also organized in the Rotterdam district of Kralingen. A lot went wrong here too. For example, many more people came than expected and everyone climbed over the fences without paying. The largest European festival to date was a fact. With performances by Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplaine and Carlos Santana, among others.

This film, which is simply called Stamping Ground (Love and Music is a name under which it was once released in Germany, and it is also a Dutch production) is really great. Sluizer captures the hippie feeling in a great way and knows how to film the bands from beautiful angles. There is also a good balance between which acts are played and there are beautiful meaningful images of the festival goers. Moreover, the whole thing sounds quite good.

The documentary consists practically exclusively of performances by the artists, with the occasional short interview with a musician in between. Most attention is paid to the 'top of the bill' bands Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd. The recorded music consists mainly of experimental, elongated (free jazz-inspired?) improvisations, so it is not very accessible; Even I, who like a bit of noise, found the clear, accessible music of The Byrds a breath of fresh air among all the psychedelic rock. But at the same time the film offers nice images of the audience of Dutch hippies, with many naked people and drug use (cannabis). All in all, an excellent document of the times.

After watching the documentary about the origins, I also saw the concert film from that time. A kind of Woodstock, but much shorter and less interesting. This is partly because this documentary is actually just a concert film where Woodstock was much more interested in the audience and all the circumstances. In addition, the quality is very poor, which means that the performances themselves never really come out well. And some things are depicted in a somewhat boring way. The music is still okay. 2.0*.
