The Forbidden City plot
San San is the daughter of a Chinese Mandarin who falls in love with an American diplomat, John Worden. When Worden is ordered to go to Shanghai, San San is sentenced to death for secretly marrying Worden and having a child. The child grows up in the Mandarin's palace and, at the age of 18, decides to escape there to visit her father, who is now a high-ranking officer in the Philippines.

A heavy melodrama that thankfully maintains its momentum and ends on time. If China is recreated in Hollywood, you can certainly question the historical accuracy, but it all looks decent, and Norma Talmadge delivers a reasonably convincing performance (if you ignore the fact that she looks neither Chinese nor Chinese-American). Not a forgotten masterpiece, but with this plot, it could have been a lot worse.
