Mm.

A slight disappointment, mainly because they fail to maintain a tight tension. The film is somewhat similar to High Noon in terms of story – but just a little different. This time it is Charles Bronson's distinctive face that does the job, but it is John Carradine in his supporting role who is the only one leaving a positive impression.

Otherwise, a somewhat different western than I usually see—no cowboy vs. Indian drama or spectacular shootouts—but an attempt at character study that takes place mainly in saloons, where most men are neatly dressed in suits.

2.5

When I was a little boy and was blown away in the cinema by Once upon a time in the West, I couldn't believe afterwards that Charles Bronson wasn't a global star yet. Looking back at his filmography, I saw that by then he had already had fairly large roles in major films like The magnificent seven, The great escape, and The dirty dozen (and the lead role for two seasons in the TV series Man with a camera), but it would still take a few years before he became a true star in action movies. Showdown at Boot Hill even came before The magnificent seven but didn't manage to make it happen either, even though Charlie was directed by the man who was also responsible for immortal titles like I married a teenage werewolf and I married a monster from outer space.

Still, this is a very nice Western that wastes no time on introductions or setups and dives right into the action with a marshal hanging around in a small town where he is clearly not welcome. The tension is built up nicely, the atmosphere in such a grimy town is captured well, and the cast, largely unknown to me, performs adequately, but the love story feels mostly like filler for the short film, and if they had seriously wanted to create the impression that the protagonist is shorter than usual, they should have asked Alan Ladd or Audie Murphy (but perhaps they were too expensive). Minor blemishes on a Western that otherwise deviates reasonably from the beaten path, admittedly with echoes of High Noon, but actually already anticipating the magnificent Last Train from Gun Hill. And John Carradine's precise diction and sharp one-liners are always welcome, especially when he has such a delightfully ambiguous role as here.
