Not so long ago I saw the film about Claude Francois. Cloclo (2012) And this film obviously has a lot of similarities, and with France Gall even an overlap. Claude Francois and Serge Gainsbourg are two completely different people. And the latter is also a lot more interesting to me. But the film about Serge is also a lot more interesting, especially because of its design, which is much less of a documentary than Cloclo. Although this film was also a bit too long for me.

The film is indeed too long because I found the first part quite interesting to follow given the original approach, the childhood and the passing of a number of well-known characters such as BB. Afterwards the film does sag and even becomes a bit boring. 5/10

Gainsbourg is not a remarkable film in itself, but the creative approach makes up for a lot. That makes this biopic a bit more than the average biographical film about the rise and fall of a famous artist. It is evident that Serge Gainsbourg deserves his own film. And then sometimes it is better to try to reflect the style and atmosphere of the artist than just the life of the man. Especially with a colorful character like Gainsbourg. In contrast to films about compatriots like Edith Piaf or Charles Aznavour, you get less into the skin of the singer and the film still balances on the edge of parody and reality. The film shows many beautiful moments, but the script sometimes gets lost in fragmentary events and periods in order to try a bit frantically to squeeze the whole life into 2 hours of film.
