"The Memorable World of Italian Dreams... The Private World of Three Brothers"
The story of three brothers who return to their childhood home in southern Italy to bury their mother. The three brothers have all taken a completely different social direction and that does not make it any easier when they see each other again. All three survey their lives and what is yet to come. They represent the main three social groups in 1970s Italy: the government, the workers and the social institutions.

Three brothers return to the family home to bury their mother. The three brothers have all taken a different direction socially and socially. That doesn't make their reunion any easier. They review their lives and look into the future.
Tre Fratelli is a very slow film with a lot of philosophical musings. So slow, I fell asleep three times and had to rewind the movie to see where I left off. But let me not be too negative: an interesting film, beautifully filmed, but otherwise not really interesting and a bit too heavy for me. 2.5*

Not for the first time, on the basis of a family epic, films also try to link and establish connections with the greater whole of time by mapping social, political and societal trends. Novecento (1976) by Bertolucci, for example, succeeds masterfully in this. Here, however, I have that feeling much less. Great family drama and that alone would have been more than worth it.
Fine acting performances in which I found that of the grandfather touching, the pater familias of the family who gathers his children after the death of his wife. The granddaughter also plays a warm role here. All this gets a bit out of balance because of the references to the three brothers and their careers.
Otherwise a great film, idyllic with the landscapes, rural Italy in the 1970s and the poetic Italian language.
