Ikitai plot

Yasukichi is a retired chemist with a drinking problem who lives with his daughter Tokuko. His antics during his many drunkenness have already driven Tokuko's children out of the house and brought Tokuko to the brink of madness. When Yasukichi is admitted to the hospital after another night of drinking, she tells Yasukichi and his doctor that as far as she is concerned he can stay in the hospital. However, the clinic is not a nursing home and Tokuko has to admit the old man back into the house against his will. However, Yasukichi now knows that the nursing home is his foreland and becomes obsessed with the legend of Obasuteyama, where old people were left in the mountains to die. Yasukichi begins to see that the tradition of Obasuteyama and putting the elderly away in a home is the same thing.
