Love Streams plot

In this adaptation of a play by Ted Allan, John Cassavetes delves into some of the myriad issues of love. A successful writer, Robert Harmon, opens his door to as many attractive women as possible, to cover up his own loneliness. His sister Sarah struggles with a painful divorce and fights for custody of her daughter. The latter does not want to know about a life with her mother and keeps pushing Sarah away from her. Sarah yearns for her daughter's love, Robert doesn't know what to do with his son who is suddenly dumped on his doorstep. He is already incapable of taking care of himself, let alone another human being.

Another one for the 'legendary masterpieces ignored on Moviemeter'! Although I might not call it a masterpiece, I have to admit that it came across as rather dated and old-fashioned in the beginning. But as the film progresses it turns into a black-cynical reflection on the phenomenon of 'love' and the film gets darker and darker, culminating in the ending during a thunderstorm (and I had to make do with the sound and some strange smudges on a black screen , the video tape was just as dated as the film sometimes ) A good story, interesting characters, caricatural but credible acting, in short: a more than successful film, good for 4 stars.

On A Woman Under the Influence, this is the best Cassavetes film in my opinion. A major part in this judgment is the fact that Gena and John share the leading roles together. They play brother and sister together (they are married in real life) and they do it wonderfully. The chemistry between these people is so great, easily explained by marriage, and it's always a privilege to see John and Gena in the cinema.

Only in Opening Night could they also be seen together in leading roles and I would have liked to see another film in which they play together. Nice story with several quite comical scenes (the scene in which Gena buys half the petting zoo and drops it at John's house was very nice!)

Nasty, depressing movie that I watched with mixed feelings. On the one hand I have to admit that the film is well put together and that the acting of Rowlands and Cassavetes is fine. On the other hand, I was terribly disturbed by the story, by the egocentric behavior of the protagonists. Sublimated degeneration, which may occur in circles around figures like Donald Trump, but which I really dislike. On balance, I therefore find this a very unpleasant film.
