Universal Soldier: Regeneration plot

"Reanimated. Rearmed. The ultimate rematch"

Terrorists threaten to blow up the Chernobyl nuclear reactor with bombs, which could cost thousands of lives. To stop this, a team of soldiers is sent in, but they are in for a big surprise: a new, deadlier UniSol in the form Andrei Arlovski. The only one who can stop the terrorists now is Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude van Damme), a Universal Soldier from the very beginning. This killing machine is doing well, until it comes up against a surprise. It turns out that another UniSol has been secretly brought in and this time it's an acquaintance of Deveraux, namely Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren). Now Luc will have to do everything in his power to not only stop two of the deadliest soldiers ever, but also defuse the bombs!

Wonderful nonsensical action movie!

I've had this film in my closet for about 5 years, but I've never seen it. Why? Easy. I always thought the film would (seriously) disappoint me. Just didn't feel like getting started. Until last night. The film was able to entertain me well, something I was not expecting.

The story is thin, meaningless and so on. But if you watch a Universal Soldier movie (I think about 6 have already been released), then you already know that the story isn't worth much. That is no different in this Universal Soldier film. But the hard action makes up for a lot. In the beginning of the film, Andrei Arlovski does a good job. Great how he takes out the other Unisols one by one. From then on you know that only one man can compete against him, our hero Luc Deveraux. Van Damme does not have a very big role, but is only allowed to show his fighting skills again at the end. When van Damme starts waving the knives (somewhere at the end of the film) is brutal, bloody and violent. Really blood spatter on the lens of the camera. Delicious! Then you have the awakening moment of our great friend Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgeren). How well this man can play a bad guy, but a bad guy like this. Maniacal, just like in the first part: I'am all ears..!!' The fight between van Damme and the two mentioned above is once again to enjoy.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration is a great action movie, which starts with action from the first minute (the kidnap scene) and actually manages to maintain its momentum. Nonsense, but also so entertaining! 3.5

hmm.

I was secretly hoping for a harder, bigger replay of previous Universal Soldiers, but this one didn't seem like it at all. It would have turned out to be a completely different film, but you can't take Hyams' nerve to breathe new life into the series.

This film is especially killer, rougher, colder and harder. In almost every way. The humor is completely gone and mainly makes way for some tightly shot action scenes. A lot of Universal Soldier isn't really that much anymore, but nevertheless it's not much worse.

However, a bit more boring. It is mainly waiting for the action scenes to make their appearance. They look remarkably tight. This action may have multiple films. Van Damme hardly has a leading role here either. Also found Arlovski's entry much more interesting than Lundgren's return.

Film also looks decent visually. Nice and rough. Ideal scenario for hard fighting and beautifully shot action scenes. Ideal environment for directors like Gareth Evans. Nice fight. However, this film also makes way for drama and story, which does not benefit the film at all.

So it is mainly waiting for the action and that sometimes takes far too long. The film can't offer much else so why wait so long. For example, the 97 minutes sometimes seem long. It's just a bit too boring despite the ideal environment. Unfortunately, that should have been used more.

There isn't much tension either. It really is literal and just a 97 minute wait for the next action scene to start. Rarely do I actually get that feeling, and that's a big downside to the film. Sometimes hard to get through. But still 2.5* for the tight action scenes.

I became a John Hyams fan after seeing the movie: Alone, which came out last year and the netflix zombie series: Black Summer. After my re-watching of 1992's Universal Soldier and its bad sequel The Return, I saw that a third installment had also been released entitled Regeneration and to my surprise it was directed by Hyams.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration was very, very good. With a straight to video budget that the film had you can really see what kind of talent John Hyams has. He knows how to make an action film from a simple plot and budget that many Hollywood films can learn from. For starters, his shot choice is really delicious. They are bold and unique for an STV movie. The camera work, which was done by his father Peter (director of 2010, Outland, Capricorne one, Timecop & The Relic) is not a shaky cam but beautiful wide dolly shots, with great tracking shots at the end. He knows how to direct the actors such as Van Damme and Dolph Drago Lundgrun very well. Despite a simple story and here and there wooden acting, Regeneration is a must for action fans but also for lovers of great directed films.
