Wake Wood plot

"Beware Those You Love the Most"

They are still very much concerned about the death of their only child; 9-year-old Alice, who was killed by a dog. Vet Patrick and pharmacist Louise move to a remote town; Wake Wood. It seems that there is some kind of ritual that allows them to spend three days with Alice. The couple thinks it's a strange idea, but they agree with Arthur, the leader of the town. But what should they do when it's time for Alice to go back again?

Meh...

In itself it is all just entertaining enough to keep you interested, but the mediocre level is never really broken. The film also lacks too much tension for a horror. Total lack of scary. The gore isn't much more than fair either.
The main ritual and related matters are so absurd that it is sometimes almost a bit laughable. For example, an average family man who without too much effort digs up his daughter who has been underground for a year, and then casually cut a finger off... come on.
The story(s) is original and the acting is also quite good.

Just to do it for once.

2.0 - 2.5*

The second movie I see from the re-established Hammer studios. I can be neither positive nor negative about it. In general, Wake Wood looks great with good acting, neat construction and nice horror moments. The latter are admittedly a bit scarce and where Hammer for me mainly stands for a good atmosphere, that is actually a bit disappointing here. Then I hope these horror icons continue down the path of The Woman In Black.

Besides, I've seen it mentioned a lot above, but this seems way too much like an easy copy of Pet Sematary. Not a problem in itself, but people should have done a bit more with this, and I'm mainly referring to more original angles. I would have liked to have seen more details on the consequences of Alice's ressurection, , and in particular why she comes back after a year as some kind of demon. So there are more things. Unfortunately, they have also gone for digital blood here, which certainly does not make the experience any better. The good cast makes up for it in any case and once it gets going, it also gets a bit more interesting. Given the scores a false start for Hammer.

meh.

I'm getting a bit tired of that cliche with bad and evil children. There aren't many recurring themes in horror movies that annoy me, but this is definitely one. Mainly because I can't really see what makes such a little boy growling a little angry so scary. Oh well, to each their own.

Wake Wood draws the strength it has from the concept. We are in Ireland where the village in question has a certain tradition. It is all quite nicely worked out and the rules that are attached to it immediately invite a nice piece of film. In addition, Ireland has been nicely chosen as a background, apart from the unfortunate fact that very little is used. Nature certainly comes into view.

We know some atmospheric sequences in between that have their heart in the right place in terms of cinematography. The department where the heart had stopped, however, was the department of sound. What a unique way of mixing sound. Some scenes sound very deafening. There are always scenes in between that stand out in terms of decibels. Very annoying actually.

Furthermore, horror that can never really be the threat that the film is looking for. Fortunately, we know a cast that acts remarkably well. I usually like to see Spall in these kinds of roles. The sometimes quite explicit moments of bloodshed, enhanced with a dark tone, also have their charm. I would have considered giving the film a 2.5* if the ending had been different. Seems to contradict the whole movie a bit. Wake Wood was ultimately not quite for me, unfortunately.
