Bloody Sunday plot

Sunday 30 January 1972, Derry, Northern Ireland. Ivan Cooper is organizing a nonviolent march for equal rights between Catholics and Protestants. He is determined to rule out all violence between the various parties. But despite his consultations with the Unionist authorities and his attempts to negotiate with British security forces, the demonstration spirals out of control: 13 people are shot dead by the army. Since that day, January 30 has been known as "Bloody Sunday". A date that also marked the start of the civil war in Northern Ireland.

strong.

Went into the film without too much foreknowledge, but luckily it was still pretty easy to follow. The movie reminded me a bit of Elephant. In a kind of observational way you are presented with the event and the run-up to it, you already sense that it will go terribly wrong, and yet it remains fascinating. The camera work is often hectic, but very functional, and the continuous switching of perspectives (black screen) worked very well for the film.

Purely visually it is not worth that much, although it was probably deliberately portrayed with as little frills as possible, which is also understandable. Also think that the film would have been more powerful if it had been shortened a bit, and would have been stripped of some unnecessary filler. The film loses momentum every now and then.

For the time being, the film gets a generous 3.5*. A few hiccups, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. One of the better war movies.

I also thought the movie was better than expected. I was a bit afraid of a historical film that would be rather long-winded, but it was actually an interesting film.

I thought it was a compelling film and partly because of the camera work you were really in the action.

There was also convincing acting, it came across as realistic.

I was pleasantly surprised by the film and thought it was worth watching.

Apart from the fact that you know that the demonstration was going to end very badly, you quickly realized in the film that it seemed an impossible task for MP Ivan Cooper to manage the heated tempers. It was fighting the beer quay. It was also interesting how excited and without any respite the British military prepared to nip the demonstration in the bud. It was this cocktail that led to Bloody Sunday…

The film provides a fascinating insight into that grim day by focusing mainly on what preceded that January 30th. Paul Greengrass has repeatedly proven that he is perfectly capable of rehashing such films for the film audience. The film feels a bit documentary-like at times. The atmosphere is explosive and oppressive, that was apparent anyway, but with the handheld camera it was even more intense.

It remains a complex fact that religious political stuff. I urgently need to read up on that history. The fact that Greengrass manages to stir that up in me makes it a successful film for me.
