11'09''01 - September 11 plot

The first cinematic response to the attack on the WTC towers in New York. French filmmaker Alain Brigand asked 11 directors from 11 different countries to give their interpretation of the events of September 11, 2001. The directors were each given 11 minutes, 9 seconds and 1 frame. This film shows how one very traumatic event can be unimportant for another. The genres of the contributions range between drama, documentary and even comedy. Very striking is the contribution of Sean Penn, and the video from Mexico by Alejandro González Iñárritu in which almost only sounds can be heard.

Very diverse short films. There are a few gems among them, but the differences in involvement with the central theme are very big, I think. I come to an average of 3*:

Iran: How do you tell children for whom the world is no bigger than their own living environment? 3*
France: Why doesn't she turn around for once? 4*
Egypt: The relationship with 9/11 is not so strong. 2*
Bosnia-H.: lest we forget; there too it is about senseless violence with thousands of victims! 4*
Burkina Faso: quite funny, but therefore stands out from the rest. 2*
Great Britain: Santiago de Chile, September 11, 1973!!!5*
Mexico: hardly any images and therefore very original, but quite creepy. 4*
Israel: It shouldn't be allowed, but you get used to everything. 2*
India: distressing. 3*
USA: strange and crude, but brilliantly conceived. 4*
Japan: ??? by far the worst of the series. 1*

Good series of short films about how different parts of the world hear the news of the attack on the Twin Towers. A beautiful, global project consisting of 11 segments by 11 different directors. Of course not all of the same level, but there are certainly some powerful images. The best was in my opinion that of Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Mediocre and a bit overloaded in my opinion. I do understand the symbolism of why there had to be 11, including the length. Well done on that front, but not everyone could finish it in terms of content. Some shorts were meaningless and boring.

Fortunately, here and there one stood out. Such as that of France, Great Britain and the United States. The more critically exposed films were interesting. It is never one-sided. Fortunately, that was also discussed here now and then.
