La Forteresse plot
Switzerland has the most restrictive refugee admission policy in Europe. Only one percent of asylum seekers receive a permanent residence permit. Despite this, the prosperous country exerts a great attraction on people who have left their motherland for whatever reason. Two hundred men, women and children wait in the asylum seekers' center, torn between hope and doubt, for the decision that the Swiss government will take on their asylum application. The refugees are monitored day and night and are located on a site that is closed off from the outside world by barbed wire. With La Fortresse, filmmaker Fernand Melgar provides a balanced and compelling look at the problems faced by the residents and employees of the asylum seekers' center. What are the stories of the refugees? And how credible are they?
