El Sol del Membrillo is a documentary that requires some sitting space from the viewer. It is a difficult film, which took me some time to get into. Once I did, you see the story of a painter who wants to paint a tree, his encounters with his wife and friends and especially the way he goes about his work.

Although the quality is somewhat variable, it has something fascinating at times. Erice is clearly a director who takes his time to make a film and since he has only directed 6 films in 43 years, he therefore reminds me a bit of Terrence Malick.

El Sol del Membrillo is certainly not bad, although you should definitely like contemplative cinema. The way in which they know how to appreciate the beauty of nature here, made it worth it for me in the end, although it is certainly not as impressive as hoped.
