The Fourth Kind plot

"There are four kinds of alien encounters. The fourth kind is abduction."

In the remote Alaskan village of Nome, an incredible number of people have been disappearing since the 1960s. An official explanation for this has never been found, but almost everyone in the village seems to know why: all the missing persons have been abducted by aliens. Some villagers were kidnapped and then returned to Nome. They open their hearts to psychiatrist Abbey Tyler (Milla Jovovich) about this.

My current movie slump isn't over yet. That's not to say I don't occasionally throw a movie into the player. Maybe I'm looking for that one print that ensures that I can finally view everything in my collection in the foreseeable future. The Fourth Kind hasn't turned out to be an eye-opener in that regard.

The theme is very appealing and the trailer suggests that alien abduction is being elevated to a kind of art form. It got me all hot! You guessed it: bought a DVD, watched it and was disappointed. There really was more to live here. The Fourth Kind does not succeed in telling a good story. Milla Jovovich and associates are mainly concerned with explaining the situation. Where I saw terrified people, I hoped for more: real kidnappings and the like. It's like watching a found footage film and an accompanying remake, both of which stop halfway through. And then comes that faint whimper that it's true. It does get interesting here and there, but actually it's all very superficial. What a missed opportunity!

Good film with a constant oppressive feeling. Also interesting that you have to think of most of it yourself, because you never see anything (that idea works in the film by the way Pontypool (2008) also fine I think!).

The only drawback I found was that switching between 'fake' and 'real' ... certainly because the real part was also completely made for the film.. but well, otherwise a big 3.5 stars!
