Het Kwade Oog plot

A mysterious vagabond creates panic in a Flemish village by unleashing a series of unusual events that make people mistake him for an evil spirit - the evil eye. In flashbacks we see the secret of his cursed past: together with his lover he decided to kill their illegitimate child and then drown himself, but he did not keep his part of the promise and survived the suicide attempt - albeit half insane. Years later, he is still scarred by the incident. He has the feeling that his then lover is still alive and looks for her in his wanderings. If he finds her and they forgive each other, he can die in peace...

Film production was still in its infancy in Flanders in the 1930s. Henri Storck and Charles Dekeukeleire were practically the pioneers with their documentaries with an avant-garde touch. And then from 1934 onwards (release by De Witte) there was the rise of popular farces created by Edith Kiel and Jan Vanderheyden. Kiel and Vanderheyden consciously and exclusively chose the humorous genre because, in their opinion, it was the only viable genre in Flanders. And they certainly had a point.

Enter Charles Dekeukeleire, who made the first drama film in Flanders with Het Kwade Oog. And it also means the end of his career as a director of feature films as it was a huge flop. It's a shame really, because for me this is a wonderful piece of work. Based on a play by literary icon Herman Teirlinck - who is also responsible for the dialogues here - it is a film with a dream-like quality. A mix of Flemish rural folklore, nature experience, religion and high romance. The mystique is heightened by the appropriate score (performed by the National Orchestra of Belgium). In a visual language reminiscent of Eisenstein - intense close-ups, editing and the use of all kinds of cinema tricks. And then there is the climax with the almost surreal vision that is also in the avant garde corner.

In terms of atmosphere, it is more in line with the silent movie than with the talkies. Which is not surprising because Dekeukeleire got its start in the era of silent films.

This is a special video and a nice discovery.
