A tad less than the first part, but it doesn't make much difference.

Where a week and a half ago after seeing the first part, I was very excited to continue with this sequel, I had to get back into it. The review of a few minutes, however, creates a lot of clarity. Again, a lot of thought is put into combat and tactics. That's quite interesting. The final battle is at times very impressive, but lasts just a little too long. The start with the wind and the burning ships, is beautiful to see.

The actors all do quite well and especially in the first half come into their own. I found the romantic subplot betweenthe female spy and the soldier still funny, although it ended somewhat dramatically. Other than that, it's pretty well put together. It is sometimes a bit less compelling than hoped, but Woo has managed to make it quite a spectacle and clearly pulled out all his stops once again. That makes this epic, together with its predecessor, very entertaining cinema.

3.5*

It was actually remarkable that a movie named after 1 event is spread over 2 fairly long movies. Yet part 1, even though there was no climax, was never boring and the entire duration was exciting and spectacular.

But the real stunner would have to be part 2. And yet this film also lasts more than 2 hours.

And just to get straight to the point, if you look at where part 1 ends and where part 2 logically should end, much less is going to happen in this film. That's why there are only a few filling things in it, such as a romance of a female spy and various things that slow the pace just a bit too much. Fortunately, we are still treated to a dazzling final scene. All in all, slightly less than the previous film, but seen together still highly recommended.

And that music.. Wow.

Since this is a cohesive epic of Red Cliff 1 and 2, I'm going to post my opinion in 1 post as well.

Red Cliff 1

In the first movie, unlike others, I think the story is better than the 2nd movie. The quest for the ally Sun Quan with some fights here and there with a nice display of Zhuge Liang's tactical combat skills. It's a pity that the generals were really overpowered, even in the Spartacus series the real gladiators are not so strong that they can handle 10 soldiers with spears. Well, let's just take that in.

Red Cliff 2

The 2nd part is exactly more unclear in terms of story, now that I think about it a few days later, some scenes seem completely unnecessary to me. Here too Zhuge Liang's tactical combat skills and wiles came into play, which was what kept the film captivating during the first hour and a half. After that you actually get the decisive battle at Red Cliff.

In my view, both parts are therefore fairly equal and make the whole into a fascinating epic about China during the Han regime.

4 stars.
