Movie that looks great. Even Audrey Hepburn's acting can count on this (unlike Roman Hoiday).

A film that has stood still in time, and at the same time wants to surf on modern times. Perhaps that is why the young Audrey Hepburn and the much older Fred Astaire were deliberately put together. Both were convinced by being led to believe that the other had already committed.

So two big names, but the result is nowhere really memorable. The only thing that lingers much more is Hepburn's dance in the French cafe. Astaire has already done better and the songs are not really songs that stick. Fortunately, Paris does have its charm as a setting and director Stanley Donen knows how to dress up the film nicely. But the musical falls somewhat between the folds of other musicals from the 1950s such as Singin' in the Rain or American in Paris.

The story should be taken with a grain of salt with these types of films / musicals. Visually and aurally it is a treat. Nice choreos, the New York and Paris atmosphere is there, and then of course there's the music by the Gershwins, among others. After Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany's it's the first time I've heard Audrey Hepburn sing and I'm quite charmed here. Her contribution in My Fair Lady was mainly with overdub. As a movie couple, I find Audrey and Fred Astaire pretty unlikely. I must add that I have always found Astaire to be a strange little man. Although he could of course dance like the best. Kay Thompson is also a figure apart but quite suitable in her role.
