In 1821 the humble inhabitants of Oberhessen, despite the hard work they do, have too little to live on. The stocking seller David devises a plan to rob the money transport of the Prince, who regularly travels with tax money from Biedenkopf to Gießen. With a group of farmers and day laborers he takes the risk that after a few failed attempts he succeeds. But their happiness is short-lived, for their sudden wealth makes them suspicious.

Schlondorf made this for TV. A film about a workers' uprising gone wrong. The uprising consists of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor (themselves). At times atmospheric, sometimes with some wacky humor, and a stern voiceover. Overall, not unpleasant, but not entirely convincing either.
