Picked up as a tip from a MovieMeter Contest by wibro. All things considered, a special kind of road movie in wartime about a soldier who, after a heroic deed, is allowed to pay a “brief” visit to his mother. All kinds of obstacles present themselves along the way and there is also plenty of room for romance in the film. Actually, that part appeals to me the most, because what happens before and after doesn't really interest me. wibro rightly makes the comparison with Letyat Zhuravli (When the Cranes Fly Over), but this film remains quite far from that, both in terms of drama and cinematography.

Beautiful, sober film about the misery and pain of the war that divides people.

Maybe he occasionally goes on the somewhat sentimental tour and even the romantic one, but then he still remains cinematically beautiful and then there are also moments of real emotion. On the other hand, there is the humor that is in certain scenes and that does not make it too heavy.

A beautiful and tragic story about a Russian soldier who is given leave by his superior to visit his mother. Beautifully filmed and I have a thing for those black and white images. Special scenes also caught the eye. The close-ups of the characters, together or not, I found it quite captivating. Of course rather exaggerated, but it is cinema of how it was experienced at the time. Strongly focused on emotions.

A bit of chauvinism (propaganda) is of course also a must. Nice opening scene also with those tank battles where the camera suddenly hangs upside down.

The film has surfaced in the top 1000 list for the first time. I do understand why. Poetically beautiful at times and one that stays with you for certain scenes. Not always very interesting, especially in terms of content, he occasionally collapsed. Otherwise great movie.
