There is a lot more going on here than the unusual theme which can explain the positive reviews as far as I'm concerned. Moonlight is primarily a film about identity and environment and is really special in that regard. A wonderful example of how a film with some very nice characters in a specific setting can tell a universal story. Aided by the fine camera work, in turn very intimate and picking up a lot of atmosphere from the environment. And some great roles (Mahershala Ali in particular is fantastic, he really needs to get that Oscar).

The film is divided into three acts. In the first, Chiron is a vulnerable child of about 9 years old who has a lot of trouble with his place in the world. In the second an adolescent who eventually assumes a role and in the third an adult man who realizes how little is left of his real character in how he expresses himself.

I wouldn't call the film a masterpiece and the reason lies in the second act, which unfortunately falls slightly behind the first and last by being just a bit more outspoken and less telling between the lines. But all in all I really enjoyed this one. And the sublime third act makes up for a lot.

Tender play with subjects such as marginalization, sexual awakening and masculinity. The nice thing about 'Moonlight' (2016) is the poetic (almost nostalgic) visual language with which the Miami of the eighties is sketched as an unbelievably hard and warm place. Where the moonlight shines bright, but for a sensitive outsider, enough darkness remains to hide from rigid masculinity norms. Three separate actors play formative phases in the life of one African-American young man in search of his own sexual identity. His first experiences with rejection and learned self-loathing. His first vulnerable encounters with intimacy and camaraderie. It makes 'Moonlight' (2016) a lazily rippling social drama, in which just the right sledgehammer blows are dealt to portray the painful sadness of a coming out in an intolerant environment. But at the same time it is a hopeful film about human desires that cannot be suppressed by the harshness of others.
