Hartenstrijd plot

After being tricked for the umpteenth time by a man to whom she had sold all her heart and soul, motorcycle cop Tina (Jennifer Hoffman) has had enough. From now on she will no longer commit to a man and will only date for sex. For the emotional part she has her best friend Fleurtje (Eva van de Wijdeven). At the same time, bar owner Sven (Tibor Lukács) makes a bet with his friend Dennis (Oscar Aerts) to prove that he can actually date a woman without sleeping with her. Sven and Tina are definitely not each other's type, but for their 'experiment' they think they are a perfect match.

No chance.

How you come to develop such a crappy thing into a film, I don't understand very much. Yet at first it seems to work for a while, but no - way, way too much sweetness and a pile of clichés for which I can no longer find a comparison. And then there remains only a small spark of something worthwhile, and that, however unlikely, is Georgina. In any case, it is also the only role that does not immediately come across as an 'irritating celebrity' - real people do not talk like the dialogues in this film. And of course they don't act like that.

And then the casting. Nothing negative about Jennifer Hoffman - but as a naive and somewhat stupid little goose, I think she is really miscast. Maybe she had succeeded in the time that I occasionally met her at the Albert Heijn, but that was in the last century, and she has become a bit too much of a strong and mature woman in the meantime. It's hard to imagine that she would see anything in the turd that Tibor Lukács portrays - another miscast.

Anyway, at least the story is presented cheerfully and smoothly in the beginning. Only somewhere after the predictable monkey wrench does things really go wrong with the overdose of cliches and sweetness, and then the real death blow comes during the end credits - white pigeons. You don't have that in Amsterdam, everyone knows that - there is only the city pigeon, more correctly also called the flying rat. If I had preferred to include that in the story, it wouldn't have become such a sickeningly sweet mess like this.

Event beer. That stuff that you can easily get rid of, that doesn't leave you with a hangover, but that you just don't feel at all. That's what I thought about this film. It all looked easy. Some characters are quite nice and generally do not irritate (unlike many other Hearts productions), but you quickly forget this. It doesn't have quality anywhere. Neither does credibility. The plot seems to be stolen from How to Lose a Guy, but the decoration full of hip people and a summery atmosphere is also very familiar. And the best actors (Geel, Peters, Pheifer) just have the smallest roles. 2.0*.

Struggle of hearts

Mediocre. The beginning is nice, Georgina Verbaan has another nice supporting role and Jennifer Hoffman is not even that bad (but miscast). But unfortunately everything else sucks. Hoffman's male counterpart (Lukács) is especially mediocre, and the script is actually a mash-up of a number of well-known American rom-coms. That really makes Battle of Hearts another inspirationless Dutch rom-com.
