Unmarried and pregnant nightclub singer Vivanne Bruce has been left on her own since her boyfriend Jerry Nolan was arrested for murder. While looking for a place to live, Vivanne eventually finds a room in a boarding house run by 'Nellie' Alistair. Nellie is a ruthless woman who offers housing for single mothers with an ulterior motive. She wants to put their illegitimate children up for sale. Vivanne shares her room with pregnant Chris Ralston. After the birth of a son, Vivanne helps Chris, but when the baby is sick, Nellie refuses help. Not long after, Chris' son dies. In the ensuing fight with Nellie, Vivanne falls down the stairs. A district nurse, who doesn't trust the fall, calls the police and Nellie is arrested. How will Vivanne's delivery go and what will she do with her upcoming baby, now that it has been revealed that Nolan has been hanged?
