Edna marries Texan Samuel Gladney, who owns a wheat mill. They had a son who was murdered at a very young age. Edna accidentally discovers how the law treats children without parents and wants to do something about it. She founds an orphanage for foundlings and orphans despite the resistance of the 'conservative' citizens who condemn the children born out of wedlock. Ultimately, Edna fights Texas' laws that brand illegitimate children.
