Robbins.

Didn't know the man, after this documentary I still don't really know him. They mainly focus on the "shows" he does, with the occasional tip of the veil being lifted. Not so bad in itself, the "person behind" docs aren't that interesting, but then something has to replace it.

Those who need this type of person might be able to get something out of it, I was mostly amazed looking at a troop of people who follow this figure like a herd. He doesn't say much sensible, but as long as you pretend you know everything, that's apparently no problem.

So what is this documentary ultimately? A promo video for Robbins I think. People who see this and say "gosh, I have to go there too!". Because there is really no substance to be found there. It's just a recording of a show, if you don't like these kind of characters don't watch.

Clearly not a documentary, more of a lengthy promo film designed to spark interest in Tony Robbins' mega-church-like seminars. No critical questions are asked by the maker, no other side is discussed. We only see the pure ecstasy and positive reactions of the "helped" people from the audience.

In addition, a number of bizarre sessions with people from the audience (one suicidal, the other a victim of sexual abuse) in which Tony Robbins devises and applies an approach on the spot without any professional knowledge or skills. It results in a flat and irresponsible 'treatment' of people who would actually benefit from consistent and long-term therapy in order to 'cure' their problems. Tony Robbins does it with some foul language and misogynistic and downright harmful home, garden and kitchen psychology, giving rise to the idea that psychological problems can be solved permanently in a few days.

Despite this, Robbins has become wildly popular in his approach and has become very wealthy with his seminars, proving that (particularly in the US) there is still a long way to go before these irresponsible gurus are banned.

Give me a fucking roarrr!

Everything is blown up about Tony Robbins, and so (?) also this documentary that indeed looks more like a sales pitch for the pricey and lengthy seminars of this guru. Berlinger turns out to be just a fan of the man, and that only raises few (no) critical questions. Robbins solves the biggest problems in no time and everyone is happy happy joy joy afterwards. Especially towards the end, Robbins' adoration became almost unbearable.

I personally find Robbins interesting in a way, but it's not my style in the end. Compare it with his mentor Jim Rohn; that is wonderfully relaxed cabaret interspersed with some wise life lessons. In the meantime, I really expect more than a kind of fan project from a documentary. Missed opportunity.
