River of Grass plot

"Being outlaws was rougher than they thought"

Near the Everglades River, the "river of grass," lives Cozy, named after her father's favorite drummer. She is lonely in her marriage and ignores her children. She fantasizes about what it would be like to be a dancer, acrobat or gymnast. One night she meets the homeless and unemployed Lee who, unknowingly, has her father's gun. He's a cop and lost it during a robbery chase. With an incident involving this gun, the two embark on a ramble with an uncertain outcome, but also a special friendship.

Reichardt's debut is also the last I've seen of hers. And River of Grass gets off to a rocky start with a very irritating voiceover from the female protagonist.

The story itself is quite interesting, and the film, thanks to its variety of characters and plots, manages to keep your attention relatively well. The cast is okay, and the twist at the end is a nice bonus (Lee wants to settle down with her (Cozy) and live a normal life, after which she shoots him and drives off in the car, because she's just come from that "home, family, and child" life and wants to escape.).

Ultimately, not a great film, but it's quite decent and the only one of the five Reichardt films with some idiosyncrasy and daring (and I'm not talking about that little bit of full-frontal nudity).

It's because the characters and story didn't really captivate me, which is why I was still bored despite its short duration, because there's quite a bit of visual interest. It's incredibly atmospheric, and Reichardt has a keen eye for striking locations, with plenty of cool and beautiful shots of small towns, the countryside, or that final shot on the highway that, if you've driven such roads with heavy traffic yourself, feels much more authentic than in many other films. It all looks a bit amateurish, but it also gives the film some of its charm. 2.5 stars.
