Shameless clone of Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) is based on the life of Marty Maher [here played by Tyrone Power], who lived 55 years from 1898 in the service of West Point where he built a reputation as a father figure who served more soldiers than anyone else. knew personally. So true, but that didn't stop John Ford from pouring the story with a combination of tragedy (many of Maher's recruits died during both world wars) and sentiment. The fact that the movie was largely filmed at West Point is definitely a plus and Power is charismatic in the lead role. In addition, there is excellent supporting work from Ford favorites Maureen O'Hara as Maher's great love and Donald Crisp as 'Old Martin'. It makes up for a lot, but it's not enough to completely iron out the shortcomings of this biopic.
