In a ravine, a corpse in a burnt-out car is found, believed to belong to the successful but corrupt middle-aged lawyer John Morland. Police Lieutenant Jerry McMullen is assigned to hunt for the killer. Catherine, the young wife of John, who is having an affair with McMullen, and his ex-convict business partner Richard Conroy, quickly become prime suspects. But the corpse is not correctly identified: a jealous John Morland turns out to be still alive. He kills his partner Conroy and then plans to kill his wife.
