9/11 plot

"The Filmmakers' Commemorative Edition"

On September 11, 2001, French brothers and filmmakers Gédéon Naudet and Jules Naudet were making a documentary about the New York Fire Department, and were interviewing a firefighter when they saw an airplane flying overhead. That plane would hit the WTC. The brothers and the fireman rush to the WTC, and they start filming from the fireman's perspective. They also film from inside the Twin Towers, and this documentary contains the only footage from inside the towers.

I thought it was a great documentary. This gives a good picture of September 11 and you see different locations. I think this was the only documentary where they were actually in the building before it collapsed. I still find it an interesting subject. I loved seeing the emotions of the firefighters. Also funny that De Niro stopped by.

I watched it on SBS6 and apparently it's a new version because at the end there was still a part of "10 years later".

What a documentary. Normally I never watch documentaries, because it's not my thing. But since today it's been 10 years since these terrible events took place, I decided to watch this documentary anyway. This documentary is incredibly gripping, as you clearly get the fear and emotion in full view.

Impressive, few other words for this.

Extremely mediocre documentary about a gigantically serious event.

The two brothers who shot the footage were purely lucky to be in the right place at the right time, as the event there naturally presents them with an extraordinary opportunity to reach the general public.

Without that attack, we would never have heard from these two documentary makers, given their lousy way of filming. Also, the installation comes across as a mess.

The only thing that should make it somewhat interesting is the fact that they shot footage in the WTC. Well, the only impressive thing there was the sound of falling bodies of jumped people. Other than that, you don't see much except for bewildered firefighters. Then the images from outside the WTC are always much more impressive.

I also have the strong impression that the images have been carefully screened. For example, you do not see a scolding, cursing or grief-stricken firefighter in the picture. Surely there were and I assume that someone who prefers himself as a 'documentary maker' would have shot those images as well.

Maybe the brothers didn't show those images out of respect for the firefighters, but the fact is that it makes the documentary a lot less impressive.

Respect for the firefighters and the two brothers, of course, but when it comes to documentaries about 9/11, there are so many better ones out there.

Tight 2 stars **
