Film about a retarded boy and his mother. One day, the boy is suspected of murdering a girl and ends up in jail. His mother investigates to prove his innocence. The film moves so slowly that it is often difficult to keep your eyes open. But certainly towards the end it turns out to be not a bad film at all and it is actually quite a beautiful and fascinating story.

Joon-ho Bong really surprised me with Parasite, but was a bit disappointing with Snowpiercer. Expectations were also high for this "Mother". The script is extremely captivating and bears witness to a mother's childhood love for her mentally retarded son. When the latter is accused of murder, she does everything in her power to prove his innocence.

Mother remains fascinating throughout the film and also has the necessary twists. The poignant family drama is built up in layers. The viewer is systematically immersed in the perpetrator's events and motives. Just a bit easy to label the police as a bunch of dumbass. They were very often sent with a clod in the reeds.

Everyone is suspicious, except Do-joon. As an underdog, he gets the necessary sympathy, your attention is diverted and Joon-ho Bong gives it a nice ending. Every now and then the reality is taken for granted, but otherwise a nice film.

Beautiful, special movie. Thriller, drama and comedy in one. About the unconditional (say obsessive) love of a mother for her child and the son who makes good use of it. Beautiful, comprehensible acting by Hye-ja Kim. But also good play from the son, Bin Won, who seems more like a spoiled child to me; his sneaky glances, the innocence, whether or not played on, the fits of rage when he is called an idiot or when his mother says something he doesn't like. Strong soundtrack, diverse too; one moment Hitchcock-esque with the shrill violins, the next melancholic with a trumpet or guitar music. Nice, calm camera work. Beautiful pictures of both city and nature.
So halfway through the second half something changes in the mother, as if she no longer wants to put her son on a pedestal and the compulsive love for him slowly crumbles. Touching scene as she sits on the bus and stares out at a lonely tree by the side of the road. What I found rather lurid is the moment when the son tells his mother dead serious what he thinks is the reason for the killer's modus operandi, brrr...
The ending is really brilliant; the mother who pricks herself with one of her acupuncture needles and then starts dancing with the other women. As a kind of victory over patriarchy. At least that's my interpretation of this movie.
