Short samurai story, which must have been recorded shortly after the end of the war. That is noticeable in the minimal effect, but everything still turned out very well. I didn't find the clownish sidekick annoying, by the way.

I gladly join the long message of my esteemed predecessor. The highlight is indeed the confrontation between the leader of the "priests" and the commander of the border post, the former improvising at lightning speed, the latter slightly amused because he understands that something is wrong here, but at the same time full of admiration for his cunning opponent . Nice that these two characters are played by the mentor (Denjiro Okochi) and the student (Susumu Fujita) respectively from the two Judo saga films, and Okochi in particular once again delivers craftsmanship here. The added value of the comedian is questionable (the booklet accompanying my BFI box set approvingly quotes American historian Donald Richie as "a bit like adding Jerry Lewis to the cast of Hamlet" ), but at least it gives the film a certain smoothness and panache. And, of course, there's the both visually and thematically stunning ending when the comic bearer wakes up against the morning sky to discover the seven have departed. A fun, smart and entertaining snack.

Made at the end of the war and the budget must be limited. Based on a play and it shows. This thing is really very clearly split into three acts and really only has three locations: in the forest, in some kind of temple (especially some cloths) and on an open field. Easy to perform on stage, but also cheap to do on film. There will have been little cost for decors. Also the entire setting with many static shots and especially talking looks like a stage in everything and then specifically the Noh theater. That makes the film especially dull and almost dead. That jester is not really great either, but it does bring some life to the whole. In terms of camera work, Kurosawa tries to make something of it, but it is not very special. Due to the short length, the score is not too bad, because there is no real chance to get bored to death. 2.5*.
