A good film about a lawyer who discovers something about himself when he takes on a murder case. A fairly mysterious plot that unfolds slowly. Atmospheric, especially thanks to the persistent rain. The film is almost hypnotic at times thanks to the slow pace and the soundtrack.

Peter Weir proves to be another interesting filmmaker, whose penchant for mysticism and idiosyncrasy I appreciate. I really enjoyed Picnic at Hanging Rock a while back, and I was very curious about this one too. It's a thriller about a lawyer who has to defend several Aboriginal people against murder charges, all while the weather is rather unusual for Australia. The murder trial itself is reasonable but not much more than that, but the constant threat that there's more to everything that happens is very well done. A beautifully evocative film, with mysterious imagery and a minimalist yet effective soundtrack, certainly helps. The film does drag a bit at times, but ultimately, I'm a fan of this kind of mysterious atmosphere. A well-deserved 3.5* rating in my opinion.

This "The Last Wave" is a slight disappointment. The film does score well in terms of atmosphere, though, as the bizarre natural phenomena and the rain that are constantly present throughout the film create a sense of mystery. The soundtrack also complements this perfectly.

Unfortunately, I rarely found myself on the edge of my seat. I expected more from David's dream scenes, because they never really become compelling. It's mostly a story that's rushed through without creating any real tension. Only a moment, like when one of the daughters notices Charlie standing in front of the house, creates some excitement.

Furthermore, the film is characterized by a lot of Aboriginal symbolism and spirituality and an impending apocalypse, but I never found it really intriguing.

2.5*
