A US Navy jet, piloted by Captain Dale Heath and young officer McVey, makes one more overland flight before both pilots go on leave. After they take off, Heath finds out that his radio and navigation equipment is faulty. They may be on the right course, but Heath can't determine if they're flying at the right altitude. Meanwhile, a commercial aircraft with Dick Barnett as pilot flies in the opposite direction on the same route. Barnett has a fully booked flight with passengers, each with their own worries. The crew and passengers do not know the danger they are in. Heath tries to prevent a tragedy and faces a difficult choice.
