Mediocre film with an intriguing premise. Rather confused script. Sometimes beautiful, but often completely unbelievable. Daniel hops me too easily from one scene to another. The film sometimes seems to want to make a social statement and then again to portray an inner identity crisis, but both hardly succeed. Lots of good intentions, lots of missed opportunities. It wasn't Gosling's fault anyway.

2.0*

Nice, but takes way too long. In fact, it is an indistinct film in which an adolescent has to choose between faith, own principles and the oppressive environment.

Nice to see Ryan Gosling in a former role and he does a great job, but at the same time this film still has the air of a cheap arthouse film that you would at most take to the Free Record Shop, because it was in the offer box.

Moral and confrontational drama about a Jew who has become a rabid neo-Nazi and antesemite. The Believer mainly seems to lash out at the docile swallowing of religious doctrine, without critically approaching the meaning of religion. Believe because it is written that way. Daniel is thus a hateful product based on his own religion, although he is more religious than he is willing to admit. Evidence of this is his resistance to his neo-Nazi friends when they vandalize a synagogue. You can also see the reverse movement with his girlfriend Carla, who at the end of the film suddenly seems to have found a foothold in the Jewish faith . It is a film that is not just black and white and shows people who struggle with their faith, ignorance and identity, but are therefore not fundamentally good or bad. A good thinking film with some hard scenes and a strong role by Gosling.
