When a beautiful young woman is murdered, several members of a local tennis club become suspicious. Police Inspector Halloran tries to find out who committed the murder.

Not really all that special, except that I would expect a plot like this to be set in a sweltering redneck American hamlet rather than a mid-sized English town, and with an inspector looking for a suspect you basically have the stuff of thousands of episodes of TV series, but it remains entertaining thanks to the excellent acting of John Mills and the presence of a couple of strong, unpleasant suspects. The punch line when the murderer is revealed is a bit disappointing, and the trick of the height of the church at the end is not very convincing, but this director would make up for that 17 years later with a slightly higher building in The towering inferno.
