If you expect a film about fashion or a compelling story about Chanel's loves, you will be disappointed. But I thought it was a really nice movie to watch. This is due to the beautiful images of France from that time, the strong acting of Tautou in particular and the entire atmosphere around it.

Nice to see some of her well-known creations at the end and during the film you also see Coco walking in something familiar, but you don't really get to see much about fashion. Anyway, it's also about the time before she really broke through with her fashion house, so that's not so strange.

Too bad you didn't get to see how everyone went on during their lives at the end. For example with Balsan, her sister or with herself. Now I had to google it but I couldn't find what happened to Balsan and her sister. I always want to know that after a true story.

Slightly underrated costume drama. Not your typical heroine story about a resourceful lady who transcended her zeitgeist by taking the corset out of fashion, but Audrey Tautou embodies the layering of this iconic fashion figure. The stern and dogged look around her lips. The unscrupulous crank with which she bites to set her limits. Those scenes in which Benoît Poelvoorde forces her to perform sexual acts - such as singing a bawdy cabaret song in mainly male company - are heartbreaking. And then that scornful smile when luck seems to be heading her way. This Coco Chanel still yearns for that romantic love, while she realizes more and more that the fairy tale is not for a woman who follows her own path. A race opportunist who did not shy away from making use of her feminine charms to advance in her own development, but who at the same time acted on ideal grounds because she denounced the manners in which women are assigned a subordinate position. Chanel's pain can be read in the glance and Audrey Tautou's facial expression - or how, as a difficult but vulnerable person, she needed men to break free from them.

Looked at Tautou, which I am quite a fan of, but the star of this film is ultimately Poelvoorde. Great actor with a bad charm, and manic energy without really going over the top, which gives the film the necessary jeu.

Furthermore, I knew little about Chanel and I agree that it is nice not to see the usual success story, but the period before it. It's something different again.

Not a great film, but entertaining, especially by Poelvoorde. 2.5*.
