When young Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) is appointed to an old entrenched parish, trouble immediately arises. Moody old Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald) of St. Dominic doesn't think much of O'Malley and his modern ideas. The two just can't agree. However, when O'Malley finds success with his work among the neighborhood crooks, the atmosphere slowly but surely changes.

Old fashioned indeed.
Especially the first hour is very dusty. A lot of interference from the local parish, an annoying gossip aunt and some grumpy old people provide, in addition to the completely outdated theme, for a not too fresh atmosphere. The limited number of votes here also indicate that popularity is finite, a lot of Oscars clearly do not guarantee eternal fame.
Fortunately, Crosby's presence pays off in the second hour. He takes the entire film (and the characters) in tow to close with a nice dash of feel-good. Crosby is the ideal man for it, a fairly smooth and airy actor for his time that I can quite appreciate.
It takes a very long time and the pay-off is fairly minimal. Furthermore, the setting remains a bit too stuffy for me and the characters (and their changes) are a bit too simple. The only bright spot: Swinging on a Star.

Usually I can understand the Oscar awards for films, but why this film won no fewer than seven Oscars, including best picture, escapes me. Neither the story nor the acting are special in my opinion. Probably a factor was that the film appeared in the middle of the misery of the Second World War. Now, 70 years later, I actually think the only highlights are the performance of opera singer Risë Stevens and Bing Crosby's interpretation of the Irish folk song “Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral”, which you can still hear in any given Sunday afternoon. the pubs in Ireland and sing along with the other guests.

A very popular movie at the box office and in the front row when the Academy Awards were handed out. Among other things, best film and Bing Crosby was even best actor ... Heavily overrated film in that area. It is pleasant viewing food for me, but there are a dime a dozen of this caliber. Bing just does what he always does, with his known charm, only now he's stepping in as a pastor. It also just takes way too long for what it is. Apart from all this, I still give it a more than satisfactory because it never gets unpleasant.
