Hidden in the heart of the Himalayas, the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan is preparing to become a parliamentary democracy. Remarkably, it is the king himself who started this process. On March 24, elections will be held for the first time in this country of only 700,000 inhabitants. But first, the Bhutans learn through a test election how a democracy works, and what it is exactly. What do they think? How do they see the future of their country? What do they hope and what do they expect? And how are the unique Bhutanese culture and tradition that is steeped in Buddhism preserved? And the most important question: what is a democracy good for? In a country where the king is highly regarded and the people themselves are not eager for a parliamentary democracy, this is not a superfluous question. The documentary shows a changing world, in a country that has long been cut off from the outside world, with a king who believes that 'Gross National Happiness is more important than the Gross National Product'.
