American gambler "Lucky" Nick Cain arrives in the Italian town of San Paola and befriends local shoe shiner Toni. Cain gets a job in a casino through Toni. In this casino the American tourist Kay Wonderly has gambled all her money. Cain has fallen in love with her and tries to pay off Kay's debts. Both get into trouble when accused of murder and flee to a deserted village.
