The film is captivating – much is unclear but you want to know where it leads – but at the end you wonder what you actually saw; the style is interesting in any case and you get the impression that someone like David Lynch took a good look at this film, as the film combines an experimental form with a psychological journey through the subconscious with horror elements. In any case, what is clear in terms of the story is that an actress suddenly decides not to say or do anything anymore because everything we say and do lies and act is fake or inauthentic (although I think the paradox is that silence also plays a role 'persona' (=mask) is). Elizabeth then stands for the unspeakable truth (or God) and Alma for the worldly (or man) in which everything is constantly changing and everyone plays roles. But the film turns out not so much philosophically as psychologically when it turns out that Alma and Elizabeth are somehow the same person but probably split as it were from trauma, which wound needs to be healed in the clinic (for a moment the film also seemed a kind of Shutter Island (2010) - MovieMeter.nl if Alma takes over Elisabeth's role and Alma also appears to be treated). In the end, I think Dievegge hit the nail on the head with her analysis of the film based on Jung's psychoanalysis on October 6, 2014 above (nice that that post was at the top when I opened this film's page !) and I have nothing to add to that.
After the first – somewhat surprising – viewing I find it difficult to rate the film; I also don't know if understanding the movie makes the movie better or worse. But already because Lynch's films seem to imitate the style of this film, I put high in terms of appreciation.

For me "Persona" is a visually artistically shot psychological film with fascinating acting by Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann.
It was good to follow for a while, but then suddenly too unclear and in my opinion simply surreal.
Nevertheless, thanks to the wonderful images and interpretations, a film that rises above the average.

Persona, Bergman's masterpiece, is a multi-layered film that is difficult to fathom. I couldn't associate the link with Carl Jung's psychoanalysis with it, but thanks to Dievegge for weaving those theories into her review. It makes a lot of sense to see the film that way.
Excellent acting by Andersson and Ullmann, respectively through the characters Alma and Elisabeth. One is a chatty nurse who takes care of a worn out verbally blocked actress. Outwardly both are very different from each other, but as the film progresses you notice more and more that both people have much more in common than expected. In fact, it's puzzling and surprising how closely the two begin to resemble each other and where you honestly ask yourself where the identity/personality of one begins and where that of the other ends.
Everything flows together through the events that both were allowed to experience with a performed and unperformed abortion. These traumatic experiences hang around their necks like the sword of Damocles. It's also clever how at a certain moment both faces of the ladies seem to flow into each other. And the sudden appearance of Elisabeth's husband also pushes things in a certain direction.
In addition to the plot, beautiful, almost poetic, beautiful camera work and cinematography. The black and white also adds to the grandeur of the film, as do the excellent acting and close-ups. Strong film that I have to let sink in...
