The director of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge is making a TV movie about some mutants from the X-Men. It was supposed to be a pilot for a television series, but that never happened. Just a few years later, Bryan Singer would give the X-Men a worthy boost with a successful film franchise. It's not hard to see why this TV movie wasn't a success.

The characters are quite lifeless and most of them have rather unclear - and rather useless - powers. But the acting and dialogue are as shitty as can be. Actually, Matt Frewer is the only one who steals the show with his completely over the top Jim Carrey impersonation. Carrey was of course extremely popular at this time, so Frewer is the perfect cheaper choice. He is the bright spot, because his insane makeup is a hundred times better than the rest of the saltbags around him. Furthermore, it is a kind of X-Men meets Nightmare on Elm Street/Inception, although that sounds a lot cooler than the performance ultimately turned out. Generation

2 stars.
