This has to be the best Elvis film for me, but that is not that difficult because 95% are crap films and they are all interchangeable. Exceptions, indeed King Creole, Charro, possibly Love me tender and then this film.

It hasn't quite stood the test of time and you can see some plot twists coming from afar, but this is still a fun film and the title number still pops out.

4 stars.

This is one of the first films (or rather his third) by rock 'n' roll idol Elvis Presley (aka "The King"), when he was still a promising actor, and this film also features one of his musical classics. namely the well-known and catchy song "Jailhouse Rock".

This story revolves around the short-tempered Vince Everett (Elvis Presley), who accidentally kills an opponent during a fight in a bar, in which he is sentenced to a long prison term. He ends up in a cell with the certain Hunk Houghton (Mickey Shaughnessy), who makes country music. Hunk teaches Vince to play the guitar, and Vince's being a good student is evidenced by his success on a live television broadcast of a prison show.

Both music and drama are perfectly balanced in this screenplay by Guy Trosper, based on a story by Ned Young, which gives the viewer a revealing look behind the scenes of the music world with its dodgy managers and corrupt advertising guys (that's no different these days). . Elvis Presley himself was responsible for the choreography of the prison show and it was directed by Robert Bronner. There is also a colored version of "Jailhouse Rock".

All in all a nice and entertaining Drama / Music film, which looks nice and this is certainly one of the better films by Elvis Presley.

Elvis his third movie and my first Elvis. I am pleasantly surprised by the level achieved here. According to the added documentary, this was generally the first film in which rock'n roll as a theme was effectively central to the story, and then built around a rocker. Previously, Elvis had only played the nice guy in his own films, so now the rock element was also involved. The highlight of this film is undoubtedly the title track, at the time a first in the musical that such a dance and song sequence was attached to a rock'n roll song. Elvis' moves are great - he invented them and the choreographer on duty worked out the sequence for the whole group. It is therefore not true that Elvis came up with the entire choreography on his own, as is sometimes claimed (I also read here on the forum).

The story does what it has to do to put Elvis in the picture as a new teen idol. But contains enough twists to keep my attention going. It is also striking that he is literally in every scene of the film. Fortunately, he does have the talent not to get bored - at least in this film. I find his acting style very convincing. According to the documentary, he was inspired by James Dean and method acting. Similarly, Elvis in his role of Vince Everett stayed outside the operating hours, to the surprise of some.

Young Elvis had it all: the talent, the looks, the moves. Also as an actor he proves to me his charisma and skills here. It is quite possible that I have already immediately viewed a highlight of his filmography, but we will see that later.
