Welcome to the Jungle plot

"Don’t get eaten"

Four young adventurers embark on an expedition into the jungles of Papua New Guinea to find Michael Rockefeller, who has been missing for 50 years. They hope to receive an astronomical reward from his family. However, the trip in the inaccessible jungle area is anything but a relaxing trip and the four disappear without a trace. Only their recovered video cameras document the horrific scenario that took place in the tropical forests.

Particularly nasty but effective horror film, in terms of style and content indeed completely in line with Cannibal Holocaust and The Blair Witch Project. Well made and acted, with a credible build-up. As is often the case with this type of film, the introduction of the characters and the start of the story are on the long-winded side, but once the nasty things start there is no stopping it. Short but powerful, in any case.

Phew, that was a tough first hour. Almost unwatchable due to the unbearable protagonists and emotionally impossible to straighten out during the last 20 minutes... but Hensleigh does it. Although the damage has already been done and the shock is completely absent, the gore is so over the top that it works. You've been wishing this for this quartet for over an hour, so that's a relief. That doesn't change the fact that Hensleigh, who is not entirely incompetent given his other work, completely misses the found footage plank.

A film with an interesting and nicely thought out concept, in which however far too much time is taken to build it all up. Once Welcome to the Jungle is really allowed to go, it all remains a bit on the safe and short side. Director Jonathan Hensleigh uses a number of nice effects and does not shy away from the dark sides of the room, but the characters are actually just barely interesting. Unfortunately, as a viewer you are stuck with it for a certain 60 minutes before they proactively find themselves in dangerous situations. It does not always make sitting through this genre film interesting, but in the past worse, similar projects have been made.
