Beautiful role by Benico, think it's a brilliant actor but the film itself (part 1)... too limited to the 'rebellion' itself. This is explained in great detail and the images are certainly impressive. The mixture of the images with black-and-white fragments of 'later' phases is also original, which sometimes makes it a bit confusing. I find it a pity that a broader picture of Che is not sketched : his background, motivations, family,... it would have completed the story quite a bit. I was actually a bit hungry... now luckily I have already read a number of books about Che. For someone who is interested in Cuba and its revolution, it is definitely a must see film...

Nice movie.

Mainly because I don't normally like biopics. I don't have anything else with Che Guevara either, so it didn't do much for me beforehand. But this remains a Soderbergh film, so he had to believe it.

And so it worked out 100%. Del Toro plays well, otherwise no American directors in key roles (very fine), beautifully shot and although on the slow side, very nicely told. It may not be as flashy as many had hoped, but I think that's a plus here rather than a negative side of the film.

In terms of content, it resembles a documentary, but in a very cinematic way. It ensures that the two hours never drag on. I did think that Guevara was portrayed very positively. As I said, I don't know much about the man, but he must not have been such an angel as in this film.

Going to sit down for the second part soon.

Che Guevara was a controversial figure, who is still widely thought of. I always find those kinds of people extremely suitable for biopics, because it's not all so black and white and you get to see different sides of a person. Steven Soderbergh tries (I think) to paint a nuanced picture of him. Guevara is a convinced revolutionary and an occasional authoritarian leader, who is not always so sympathetic. In the end I found this biopic a bit on the impersonal side.

This film is much more about how the Cuban revolution went with a striking number of war scenes. With a boat 80 revolutionaries make the crossing to a distant part of Cuba. By involving the locals in their struggle, their strength grows and they move further and further towards Havana. How it all went was interesting, but it wasn't necessarily just about Che Guevara. Che's motives are anyway discussed in a second storyline, when he is in New York and is allowed to speak for the UN. That could have gotten a little more attention from me, but oh well... On to part 2! I'm curious how that will go!
