Maggie Smith, Judy Dench, Joan Plowright, Cher...a nice highlight in a chronicle of the life of a British community in beautiful Florence.

British behavior, rather anecdotal, is of course very well represented by the ladies, even when it has to fight against fascism, its opponents and finally WWII. In addition to the ladies, the story of the coming-of-age of young Luca is central.

The last part of the film, the occupation and the liberation, is rushed through quite quickly.

Good film in which four British ladies in Florence take care of a motherless boy. The film is set in Italy before and during the Second World War. Beautiful locations and costumes. In itself a good story that tries to tell a lot, but lacks the necessary focus. A fine cast with two wonderful roles by Cher and Maggie Smith.
