The Man from Earth plot

"From one of the acclaimed writers of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone comes a story that transcends both time and space..."

An impromptu farewell party for Professor John Oldman turns into a mysterious interrogation. The retreating scientist reveals to his colleagues that he has been walking the earth for 14,000 years. But because this seems very unlikely, people seriously wonder whether the professor has them all in order.

The movie poster promises more in terms of spectacle than the movie has to offer; it seems as if the film was shot in 1 day with a cheap camera and a cast consisting of some random people from the street. So amateurish. Fortunately, the film revolves entirely around the dialogues and the original fact, although it all comes across as very poor.
It is therefore a pity that the film does not really succeed in finding depth, the dialogues remain superficial with predictable and poorly acted reactions from the characters. The story about faith and Jesus in particular is nice as it goes a little deeper, although it's a shame that the guy was so called Jesus.

Given the very high ratings on IMDB, I was very curious about this film. Expectations were high - I hadn't read anything here yet - but as the film progressed, I had to conclude that they were not completely fulfilled.

The concept is simply fantastic, let me be clear. The idea that someone is immortal, having experienced the entire history of mankind firsthand, is a thought I could debate for hours. In that respect, the film will stay with me. Now unfortunately this premise is about the only thing that makes the film strong and that is a lost opportunity. If I take a look at Schenkman's other films, it doesn't seem like much to me either. Despite this brilliant concept, it is also the millstone around the neck. The story is too weak to elaborate on this theme. Too little thought has gone into it. The film captivated me until the last second, but I was still hungry. Unfortunately.

Apart from this, you can quote very little. Filming is awkwardly done in one room. The characters are a mixed bag (are they all professors?), a lost student and crazy psychiatrist who needs help herself. The interpretations were also substandard. Also that John was Jesus is a bit over the top and totally not believable within the concept. It even undermines the concept. How can you succeed as a director (or screenwriter)?

The ending ok yes, I can still accept it, although it also depends too much on coincidences. Since he travels through every ten years it is almost impossible to bump back into your son apparently. The idea that John probably wasn't the only one was interesting (but again limited to not explored). A missed opportunity all the way and a disappointment with it. Put this in the hands of, say, a Sam Mendes and you'll come a long way!

Interesting low budget SF piece, which would also work very well as a play. Put a number of intellectuals in a living room and let them philosophize endlessly. Strangely enough, it turns out to be surprisingly fascinating and entertaining, helped by a decent group of actors and an intelligent script. Visually, however, the film looks quite dated. Already.
