Side path for Cheh.

Which, to be honest, doesn't amount to much. The pirate story doesn't really blend well with the classic martial arts violence. Although, it must be said, outside of the opening scene, there's not much pirate action.

The gang heads ashore fairly quickly, and what follows is a fairly classic Shaw Bros. story, only with a few more fishermen and a final scene on the beach. That final scene, by the way, is a unique one within the Shaw Bros. This time, there's no winner or even a fight with the top bad guy, but simply an honorable sparring match. It's something different, but I doubt it was truly better.

There are some familiar faces, a few fun martial arts scenes, and thankfully some of it was filmed on location (I wasn't exactly in the mood for a studio environment), but it all moves a bit too slowly and awkwardly. The pirate scene clearly wasn't Shaw Bros. material, or at least not in Cheh's hands.

A nice curiosity, but that's where it ends.

2.0*

Reviewed on Blu-ray from Eureka.

Pirate vs. General. It's always a pleasure to watch Ti Lung and David Chiang together. And when they have a "friendly" duel on the beach, it's absolutely fantastic. Other than that, the story doesn't really have much depth.

By the way, this version lasted 100 minutes, and not 92 as stated above.
