Mary Shelley plot

"Her greatest love inspired her darkest creation"

Mary is a rebellious, outspoken teenager. When she meets the poet Percy Shelley, sparks fly between the two outsiders who feel trapped in polite society. When Mary's family discovers that Percy is married and has a child, they forbid all contact. Mary and Percy then flee, taking Mary's half-sister Claire with them. It's a big scandal and with Percy's flirtatious ways, rumors of a ménage à trois quickly spread.

What a disappointment!

The first female director from Saudi Arabia will film a biography of a woman who, at the age of 18 on New Year's Day 1818 (exactly 200 years ago), wrote a great story that is still used as a metaphor for the risks of 'change' and of 'progress'.

I sat down and was so curious about her view from her Eastern culture on this Western icon: student Frankenstein creates a monster that he rejects and who then tries to survive alone in a hostile culture. How many ingredients do you need to weave a contemporary view into a historical context?

Forget it. Before the film starts, you spend three minutes looking at logos of all the producers who all wanted to pee. Afterwards you will read that Al-Mansour has updated the screenplay. It was of no avail.

The film is a Western romance dragon of the first order that neatly rattles off all known facts and leaves you as a spectator with a highly unsatisfied feeling. A picture book, neatly decorated, occasionally naughty, and that was it.

Bloody hell. Her film Wadjda was so subtly moving critically...

I'm not into horror stories, so I only know “Frankenstein” by name. Nevertheless, I quite liked this biopic about the author of the story. Elle Fanning convincingly portrays a rebellious young woman who was far ahead of her time. That's probably the only thing I will remember from this film.
