Nocturama plot

Paris, one morning. A handful of young people from diverse backgrounds. They all start from different places on a bizarre ballet in the labyrinth of the metro and the streets of the capital. They seem to be following a script. Their actions are purposeful, they almost look dangerous. Their paths converge at the same point, a department store that is just closing its doors. A moment later, Paris explodes. The attack has begun.

McSavah's five stars convinced me to grab this one in theaters when the opportunity arose. And that's a good thing, because I thought it was very strong. The most important point of criticism is perhaps that the period in the oversized department store is about 10 minutes too long, but otherwise Nocturama is a fine stream of images of moving characters with a chillingly good score: by Berlioz (beautifully used) to Willow Smith, with menacing ambient in between.

What is also good are the interactions of the characters with each other. There is no explicit interpretation, both individually and in their group relationship, and as a viewer you have to find out for yourself. For example, there is no permanent leader; this role changes again and again. The motives also remain a mystery. What does become clear is that most characters have no ideology worth dying for. Eventually the realization dawns that life is precious, and that risking it was a fatal mistake. How you can see a glorification of terrorism in this is a complete mystery to me.
The dynamic camera work, the music and a series of impressive scenes, including the tense last ten minutes, make Nocturama a very good film. Elephant is a bit better (otherwise too), but it doesn't make much difference.

The account of a group of young people in Paris who commit attacks and then hide in a department store. Seen from those young people. Usually we witness such attacks through the news and the approach that is then publicly demanded to crack down on terrorism. There is apparently no real motivation and several of the young people are also just students at the university. This image makes the attacks seem a little more heroic in the beginning than the usual image. By omitting the motivation (or keeping it vague), the focus is also on the attacks and not on the problems that drove the young people to go so far.

Later we follow the young people in the department store. They enjoy the evening with the idea of fleeing the next day. They don't seem to take it too seriously either. Attacks are part of rebellion, aren't they? You also quickly get sympathy for them because of the playfulness of the young people. Because they have good intentions! And we don't hear from victims, so it's mostly symbolic against buildings, right? Not...? If they are shot without thinking in the end, it conflicts with that sympathy. Because at the same time we also want tough action against terrorism after an attack.

The idea is not bad and the film is more fascinating than it appears. But the controversy and social indictment remain somewhat under the surface. This could have been tougher.

A controversial film that limps on several emotional thoughts. It is difficult to determine how to look at the young people. Well, let me be clear. This should be harshly condemned anyway. This goes much further than some rebellion and bad boy pranks.

And yet those youngsters don't seem to be the worst. They are also so close to who you and I are. That also makes it confrontational and frightening. Their motives are hardly explained, so there is not much to fall back on.

It becomes even more difficult to take a stand when they are cold-bloodedly shot down by the special forces without compromise, because terrorists are not negotiable. Still one to think about. The line between terrorism and insurrection is sometimes thin, which makes this film even more interesting.
