This is a confrontation with unadorned reality. Angie works for a London company that recruits guest workers from Poland. When her sexist boss fires her, she decides to start a similar business herself. That is not obvious for a single woman with a problem child.

Angie is sympathetic, although you might want to warn her not to get involved in those matters. It's like mopping with the tap open. She takes a hard line against the workers, but some scenes show that she does care about them.

Kierston Wareing plays a strong role. Being from Essex, she doesn't need to change her accent much, if at all.

Ken Loach with a typical critical note about some shortcoming in society. It is a kind of silent protest to denounce certain abuses. It is sickening when you exploit the weakest in society for your own gain. Now, Ken Loach doesn't make it a one-dimensional movie. He tries to explain his message through the main character Angie.

The big plus of the film is the premise. Loach does not fall into the sentimental or one-sided trap that often accompanies such dramas. Angie is both victim and perpetrator of the system, which makes for an intriguing take on the film. Moreover, Angie is a character with a soul that allows some understanding (not approval) to arise from the viewer. She too has her problems and therefore her motives. It's a matter of survival. Foreigners and especially illegal immigrants are easy to exploit by financially squeezing them through dirty unattractive but also dangerous jobs. If you also house some of them, then you have them completely under your control.

The debuting Kierston Warein gives very beautiful shape to the single mother Angie. It is a realistic raw film that the Loach fans will certainly appreciate. More than a decent 3.5* as far as I'm concerned.

As usual, Ken Loach hit the social tour.

This time about the exploitation of immigrants, which also happens more often at Loach, with relatively unknown actors who nevertheless impress and strongly underline the dire problem of dealing with immigration.

Subject that is permanently topical and who else but Ken Loach can convey this sharply to the public as a filmmaker.
