Penn emerges as the King of the bullshit movie and gives new meaning to the White Savior Syndrome in this romantic drama about doctors Wren [Charlize Theron] and Miguel Leon [Javier Bardem], who find themselves amid the horrors they encounter in various war zones on the African continent develop romantic feelings for each other. Penn tries to convey the tragedy of war with moody music and images of screaming local residents who accost their 'white saviors'. Even worse are the scenes in which Theron and Bardem play with those playful, but oh-so-cute African children. The lead actors do what they can, but Penn's direction is just as cringeworthy as Erin Dignam's preachy screenplay.

The poster is very promising with director Sean Penn, actors Charlize Theron, Javier Bardem, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Jean Reno and Jared Harris, music by Hans Zimmer and cinematographer Barry Ackroyd who shined with The Hurtlocker, among others. A subject that certainly deserves the necessary attention. But unfortunately the subject fades into the background and the black actors are more like extras. Besides, it's just not very interesting. Too bad, because I think several people from the cast & crew started this film with good intentions. But unfortunately it remains very poor and the film does not turn out as you might expect.

The Last Face gets just about everything wrong, from the soundtrack to Aunt Sarie, from the unfortunate romantic plot to the fragmentary storytelling. The highlight is Exarchopoulos' dramatic scene - undoubtedly factually justified in the context, but misplaced in the narrative and, because it is not followed up, especially exploitative. Equally misplaced is the focus on the suffering of the tormented care providers, while that of the victims left behind is apparently irrelevant.

As far as I'm concerned, the failure is entirely the fault of the direction and producers - the actors actually perform well without exception. Perhaps the relationship between Theron and Penn has clouded common sense too much. Still incomprehensibly bad, it would have been better for everyone if this film had just been thrown in the trash.
